Before the session, every participant should verify their identity through two-step verification. The first step is identity proofing. It is a procedure by which the participant affirms their identity through a dynamic knowledge-based authentication (KBA) process.

To verify your identity via KBA, you need:

  • A valid US address
  • A Social Security Number (SSN), at least two years old

How it works

  1. When getting ready for a notary session, right after you fill in your personal details, you will be prompted to pass the KBA process.

  2. You will be asked a series of questions on your personal history to establish and confirm your identity. To pass, you must give correct answers to at least 4 out of 5 questions within 2 minutes.

  3. You have two attempts to complete the quiz.
    • If you fail the first attempt, you will be forwarded to retake the quiz.
    • If it happens for the second time, the session will be locked. You will have an opportunity to redo KBA in 24 hours. This waiting period is required by law.
  4. Once you've completed the KBA, you'll move to the next step – Photo ID verification.

For some online sessions, it is also allowed to use the Biometric Identity verification method. The OneNotary platform will notify you if you are eligible.

Security note

The identity proofing is handled through the integration with our partner. OneNotary stores no data about the asked questions and the given answers. Once the identity proofing is successful, the partner notifies the OneNotary platform that the signer may or may not proceed furthe.
