Every state has specific requirements to what Photo ID can be used to prove your identity in front of the notary. Two universal options accepted in all states are:

  • National Passport or U.S. Passport Card

  • Driver's license or I.D. card issued by a state or outlying possession of the United States

Additionally, some states allow ID verification with:

  • Permanent Resident Card or Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-551)

  • Employment Authorization Document that contains a photograph (I-766)

  • Foreign Passport with a temporary I-551 stamp

  • ID card issued by federal, state, or local government agencies or entities

  • U.S. Coast guard Merchant Mariner Document card

  • U.S. military card

If you are about to use any of the IDs from the additional list, please check with your state requirements. Technically, you may pass the identity verification but your notary will also confirm that the presentation ID complies with the state requirements before completing the notarization.

In addition to a Photo ID, you are required to possess a U.S. Social Security Number that has been in existence for a minimum of two years.
